New Noise Glasgow - 24.04.2012

The new night in town hit Glasgow running. Good tiimes!!

My other experience of New Noise was in the long-running Aberdeen venue, so this one had me excited like a toothless granny in a marshmallow shop. Had a bangin’ night with friends old and new. Cheap drinks, big banter and the odd bad dance-move by myself.

If anyone is in Glasgow on Tuesday this week, this is where the party is at ;)

Meshuggah - The Garage 15/04 (THE SKINNY)

Animals as Leaders tore it up at first and what an shiny looking set-up that was! It took me seconds to see the shots I wanted, unfortunately, as it took half an hour to get a beer, there wasn’t much more time than that to spare. I had Opeth on the transistor radio a couple of days before and kept thinking how similar some of their riffs were, minus the vocals, this was a good thing. After a beer and a breather the headliners were up.

First time seeing Meshuggah. I was one of those guys who has “heard a couple of their songs”. Seeing is believing with these guys. This is serious music for serious people. You feel very at ease with the fact half the venue is a moshpit, it seems normal. The place this band takes you is akin to some tribal ritual, with lots of sweaty people. Great set from start to finish.

BAR GANDOLFI, GLASGOW - 10/11/11

Saying ‘Muldoon’s Picnic’ in Bar Gandolfi doused me in some surprise is saying it lightly. I couldn’t place their influences nor their style but I was grinning and it was the music giving me this toothy expression -a great one hour slot hidden away in Glasgow’s merchant city. Stepping foot into this place always feels like a fusion of eras. Some prohibition era type music set-up. Relaxed and non imposing, yet dressed as modern chic scottish hangout. Cool times bro.

BAR GANDOLFI, GLASGOW - 06/10/11

Had the opportunity to shoot a laid back performance by Ian Gregson and Niall Michael Joseph Gahagan at Bar Gandolfi recently, which was a great little night. Bumping into Ian on the subway home one night after the Howling Bells gig lay the foundations for this and was in itself, a very unexpected but enjoyable little bit of banter.

The music night in Gandolfi runs every Thursday from 9 for anyone interested. Pricey but great little hangout.

EASTEND HOUSE [URBEX]

This place is like nowhere else. It was a bit of a challenge getting in but once we did, we started slow. From there, I let my senses guide me through the dark corridors into blackened rooms, which was nothing to the nerves in comparison to seeing old mannequins and figures mangled up on the floor in an empty room, or waiting at the end of another, caught in the only creak of light that broke through the shuttered windows. Like any good trip, I was on edge the whole time. The cause this time being the creepy creaks and bumps that occasionally came from the upstairs rooms.

Howling Bells - Oran Mor 19/09 (THE SKINNY)

Was down here on Monday shooting the second gig I’d ever seen at Oran Mor, this time for the Skinny. The first gig left with a feeling of wanting more, which I put down to the venue but this time I was very impressed. On first was Aerials Up, a seven piece Glasgow band. Aerials Up kicked the night off with a wonderful energetic indie-folk set. Each song impressing me more than the last. Keep an eye on these guys!

After the beer break Cold Specks had us next with her chilled melancholic voice which stopped you in your tracks, like a Macy Gray with talent that has something to sing about.

What we had all been waiting for. Howling Bells. I hadn’t had the chance to hear this ozzie band play before but had made chat to various people about what to expect and there was not a negative word spoken, terms like goth-country, indie, rock where being wildly tossed about but when Howling bells kicked off, I knew exactly what everyone meant! These guys have a new fan after tonight with an amazing sound in the world of these aforementioned genres. Even if I was deaf, the eye candy would have been enough!

URBEX - AN PERSONAL EXPLORATION

I think it comes from the memories of our childhood -the desire to explore. A time when we were all once young and free and wild.

Adulthood is simply conformity these days which we aquiesce into, we see things with our eyes and our heart tells us yes! But then our teachings kick in and we remember the many reasons we shouldn’t or aren’t even allowed to do such things, which is ironic I think. The act of being mothered when we are supposed to act like adults.

The abandoned and the derelict are the urban playgrounds for those of us seeking what we’ve missed, for a very long time. For that old beating sense of danger of which we’ve been starved.

It’s when you step foot, for the first time, in one of these buildings that you feel familiarity. The old pang of fear and wonder when your imagination staggers into motion again. Everything you’ve taught yourself to disbelieve is now a possibility and
every shadow and unexplained creak only seek to add to the wonderful story your imagination is conjuring behind your back.

In a sense it’s like a slice of escape: treading a path in a place that doesn’t exist anymore; a place that is beyond society’s boundaries, distant from its touch, except from the occasional scarcely heard whispers you tell yourself, are passers-by.

BEST OF THE BIZKIT TOUR

June and July was the opportunity to tour Europe with Limp Bizkit with my mates in Psyko Dalek and Punto our beast of a driver. It was a pretty big thing seeing as I grew up with the beats of “Pollution” and “Counterfeit” screaming through my ears, so as you can imagine, I was syked all the way there…all 915 miles of them. The stripes on the road begin to strobe before your eyes before long.

It was a wicked experience, getting to hang with the likes of John Otto and Fred and some of their amazing crew and security. You know who you are. I also met some wonderful folk along the travels, again, you know who you are. :)

Above is a collection of ten of the best photos, which I like for varying reasons, Hopefully any LB fans out there enjoy checking them out as much as I enjoyed taking them. Dig it!

FASHION PHOTOSHOOT WITH LISA - 23-08-11

I’d rate this as my first hands-on fashion shoot and thankfully it went pretty well. The theme for the shoot was hippie theme but I couldn’t attempt it and not make it punchy. I’ll probably rework a few but for now, this is the results.

THE NATIONAL @ O2 ACADEMY - 24/07/11

Got the opportunity on Wednesday to do The National gig in the Academy, really didn’t know what to expect as I had only heard of the support band -Wye Oak, who I’ve realized I love more than I did, probably something to do with wanting to marry the singer…ahem.

Beast of a show though, Wye Oak played out in front on the couple of thousand already there by halfway through their set, offering their insanely good sounds to everyone waiting for The National. To be fair though, Wye Oak will soon be playing in here and bigger too.

The National show blew me away more for the light show than anything else, but the full house had a great atmosphere. Cracking first time seeing these guys play and brill company from mi amigos who I by chance bumped into :)
